«Das Denken unterbrechen»: An Exhibition on Drawings, Notes, Idea Sketches
November 22, 2015 to February 14, 2016
The exhibition «Das Denken unterbrechen» (Suspending Thought) takes up an element of interest to both the Sitterwerk and the Kunstgiesserei: drawings as idea sketches, as a continuation of thought. It addresses sketching as the moment at which the hand takes over thinking.
The theme of sketches has many facets, as a group of works, as a process, as a statement, as a performance. With this exhibition, we devote ourselves to technical sketches, those drawings that are necessary in order to find out how to construct something, or how to realize an object that corresponds to a specific idea. At certain moments, as the theory goes, sketching takes over thinking. The hand with the pencil takes over the intellectual output, conceptualizing, thought. Or, as the architects Herzog & de Meuron put it: «The hand suspends thought.» The exhibition examines this fleeting moment from various perspectives.
With contributions by Monika Bartholomé, Hans Josephsohn, Sarah Klein, Mathew Kneebone, Karel Martens, Paul Stiff, and with sketches from the Kunstgiesserei St. Gallen.
On the 14th of february 2016, during the finissage, Monika Bartholomé and Roland Früh had a talk about the Museum für Zeichnung.
The opened drawers of the lockers served as a stage for some examples of the collection.
